Virtual 3D World/Campus in Second Life
The Futures Institute has initiated the construction of a 3-D virtual world that will be available for experimentation and application in class projects, collaborative work, pure research, virtual environments and simulations.
The goal of the Virtual World is to offer additional tools to our faculty and ultimately to enhance the educational experience for our students. The Futures Institute will use a variety of technologies to accomplish this, but Second Life (http://www.secondlife.com) is the vehicle that will bring the virtual world to life.
Second Life is a virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and as of late 2007 10 million people have tried it out. Of those, there are about 40,000 logged in at any time, world-wide.
Second Life provides a unique and flexible environment for educators interested in distance learning, computer supported cooperative work, simulation, new media studies, and corporate training.
From the New Media Consortium, to Princeton, to the Australian School of Film and Design, educational institutions are tapping into this emerging platform as a new way to facilitate interaction and communication between staff and students.

If you would like to visit us there, create an account at secondlife, download and install the client software. Once you're in the world, conduct a search for "CPCC Campus" then teleport there. You may also email DI. vonBriesen for an orientation.
If you're an educator and are willing to give up in-world anonymity, we're offering the use of office space on our campus to further nationwide and internation collaboration and exploration of this new medium.
