Classroom Civility

Create a positive climate in your classroom. This section suggests a few general approaches to encouraging appropriate behavior in the classroom, and how to respond to classroom incivility if it happens.

Classroom management tips from veteran CPCC faculty.

1. Remember that the College has a zero tolerance policy, students must abide by the rules set by the instructor. If you experience problems in the classroom contact campus security and notify your department liaison.

2. Be prepared, having high expectations and standards for progress, and engaging students daily in learning is the best way to avoid unnecessary disruptions.

3. List your classroom expectations and rules in your course syllabus and then follow them!

4. Review the CPCC Student Code of Conduct subsections that deal with particular behaviors such as cell phone disruptions, academic dishonesty, disruption of teaching, and failure to comply with instructions of a college employee.

Promote a Learning College Atmosphere

The college’s purpose is not to transfer knowledge, but to create environments that bring students to discover and construct knowledge for themselves and to make students members of communities of learners that make discoveries and solve problems.

Follow these steps recommended by the Learning College:

  • Assess students’ needs
  • Encourage attendance and participation
  • Design meaningful learning experiences
  • Learn about the college and its resources
  • Provide technical assistance to all learners
  • Develop feedback mechanisms
  • Arrange for work-based learning
  • Arrange for service learning
  • Nurture interpersonal relationships
  • Create connection activities
  • Guide, tutor, and coach
  • Maintain an attractive and supportive environment
