Building Name Process

Process to Name Existing Buildings

Approved by the Cabinet on October 11, 2010

Foundation will manage this process.

Committee Members: Dr. Maha Gingrich, Dr. Kevin McCarthy, Becky Hall, Dr. Edith McElroy; Eric Jensen; Laura Temples and Andrew Horton

Building Names Committee: Dr. Kevin McCarthy, Becky Hall, Dr. Edith McElroy; Eric Jensen;  Laura Temples and Andrew Horton

  1. Potential Donor is identified by the Foundation or the President of the College.
  2. Executive Assistant to the President creates an “Information Item” on the agenda with the potential donor information to be shared with the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  3. President of the College presents the proposal to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  4. Upon the agreement of the Executive Committee, President of the College and the Foundation approach the donor with options available as stated in the CPCC Foundation Donor Recognition Program Guidelines. Along with the gift amount, the proposed name of the building is discussed. 
  5. With the donor’s agreement, the Associate VP of the Foundation and/or the President of the College share the proposed name of the building with the Cabinet.
  6. Executive Assistant to the President creates an “Action Item” on the agenda to present to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  7. President of the College presents the proposal to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees for its approval.
  8. After approval by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, the proposal is submitted to the entire Board of Trustees for final action. The proposal must be approved by a two-thirds majority of the Board of Trustees per Policy 6.17.
  9. Upon approval by the Board of Trustees, the Executive Assistant to the President sends an email with the exact name of the building, names of Board of Trustees and any other pertinent information to the Associate VP of Foundation.
  10. After receiving the official approval notification, Foundation informs the critical areas of the College via email about the proposed name change and the dedication date if determined. Those areas are: Campus Deans, Facilities Services (to change the name of the building in the Colleague system), Community Relations and Marketing, ITS (to change the name of the building in the Ad Astra), and CCE. The building code will remain the same.
  11. Foundation works on the payment, recognition event, building signs, external signs, plaques, portraits etc.

Process to Name New Buildings

Facilities Services will manage this process.

New Building Names Committee:  Vicki Saville, Dr. Kevin McCarthy, Becky Hall, Dr. Edith McElroy; Eric Jensen; Laura Temples and Andrew Horton

  1. When construction or an acquisition of a new building is approved, Facilities Services will convene the “New Building Names Committee” to discuss the potential Building Code and the temporary name of the building.
  2. Proposed Building Code and the temporary building name will be presented to the Cabinet by the Executive Vice President for approval.
  3. Upon approval by the Cabinet, the Building Code and the building name will be used consistently on all reference documents and other communications.
  4. Executive Vice President will notify the Committee of the approval.
  5. If a donor is identified to rename the building, the “Process to Name Existing Buildings” will be implemented.
