Campus History:

  • By the winter quarter of 1996/7 the College opened the second building at its Huntersville location. It was named the Public Safety building, and its 35,000 square feet contained standard classrooms, a computer classroom, two science labs, a two hundred seat auditorium, a mock courtroom, a firearms training simulator room, two lounges, a library, a weight room, and offices.
  • The entire criminal justice department was moved from the Central Campus to the Public Safety building, and the North Campus was born. (By this time the original building had been named the Claytor building in honor of Bill Claytor, a former chairman of the College’s Board of Trustees.) CPCC’s criminal justice classes have been offered exclusively at the North Campus since December of 1996.
  • In November, 2000, the Public Safety building was renamed the Claudia Watkins Belk Center for Justice.

In the fall of 1990 Central Piedmont Community College opened its new “North Area Learning Center” on Verhoeff Drive in Huntersville. It was a single building with about 10,000 square feet of space including offices, standard classrooms, and a computer classroom. Initial course offerings included general education transfer classes, developmental classes, and corporate and continuing education classes.
