Language Lab
The Challenge:
CPCC has an ESL student population of more than 2000 students each semester. Classes fill quickly leaving some students without an option for ESL instruction.
The Solution:
CPCC addressed the problem by introducing Crossroads Café Classroom in its language learning lab. Because of the flexibility of the lab, CPCC is able to serve a large number of students who learn at a distance.
Implementation:
The language-learning lab at CPCC is open 35 hours a week including some Saturday hours. A teacher is available 3 hours per week to meet with students studying Crossroads Café Classroom on an individual basis. The lab facilitator role is key in this delivery model. This person assists the student with lab questions and aids the student in accessing all of their materials. There is no deposit required for material use because the video and printed workbooks are not allowed to leave the lab. This system uses materials “on reserve” for registered students. Students watch the video in the lab and prepare their exercises. Students can opt to meet the teacher during “class” hours, or communicate with the teacher through correspondence by leaving work in their individual folder. The student is awarded a certificate of completion at the end of thirteen episodes.
Role of the Student:
- Register to use lab and Crossroads materials
- Attend orientation/pretest
- Visit lab to access material
- Sign attendance sheet
- Attain video, print material and student folder from lab facilitator
- View video in lab
- Complete assessment and exercises
- Meet with teacher to discuss work
- Leave material for teacher to correct
- Sign out
- Complete at home exercises
Role of the Teacher:
- Prepare materials for lab
- Orient students/pretest
- Register students
- Meet with students on a individual basis
- Coordinate with lab facilitator the availability of self access material
- Correct work and assessments
- Maintain student folders and paperwork
Role of the Lab Facilitator:
- Prepare place to house materials
- Cut books for "one chapter at a time" student access
- Greet students as they enter lab/register new students
- Aid students in materials access
- Assist students with equipment questions
- Direct students to teacher of to independent study
- Collect assessments
- Change materials for students as they leave class
Conclusion:
CPCC's language learning lab serves more than fifty students per semester who study at a distance using Crossroads Café Classroom. This method has served as a good option for students who cannot attend a traditional class setting because of various personal barriers, for students who need a structured lab environment, and for students who want to study, but find that all classes are full. CPCC allows preregistration for the upcoming semester to students who were closed out of a class yet studied Crossroads Café Classroom in the language lab.
