FAMILY MATTERS

Day Care Decision Making Activity

Overview of Activity: How to find acceptable child care

Suggested Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes

Outcome: Parents will know a telephone number and a website address that will help them to find appropriate child care. They will also know questions that should be asked.

Watching and Listening: Watch the interview in class and ask the students to note how the mothers being interviewed solved their dilemma.

Procedure: Ask the students to write a short description of their family. Have them include the number of adults and their ages, the number of children and their ages, and the number of adults who work. Also, have the students write down the hours and days that each adult works.

Activity: Inform the students that they can telephone The Child Care Resource and Referral Agency at 1-800-345-KIDS (5437). This agency will help them to decide on the most acceptable child care for their students. To receive local help, they can e-mail www.naccrra.org/index.htm. Next, separate the students into groups and ask them to think of questions to ask these different organizations. Lastly, have them to present their ideas to the class.
