TIME IS MONEY

Services Offered by the U.S. Post Office Activity

Overview of Activity: Discussions about the U.S. Post Office and related activities to inform students of the importance of the postal service

Suggested Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes

Outcomes: Students will understand that the United States Post Office offers many opportunities as well as services to the residents of the U.S. The students will also know how to ask questions pertaining to the post office as a service facility and as an employment opportunity.

Watching and Listening: Together, students and teacher will watch the interview at the end of the episode. After watching the interview, a brief conversation should follow discussing the proximity of a post office to students’ homes and how often they frequent the post office.

Procedure: Write the word “Post Office” on the blackboard. Ask the students to suggest all the words they associate with the post office. Write each word or phrase on the board with a line joining it to the original word, in a circle, to create a ‘sunray’ effect.

Activity: Then discuss the words and their meanings. If the students omit job opportunities, wiring money, or possible sources for contracts with minority owned businesses, please add these suggestions to the list. Emphasize in your discussion that the U.S. Post Office is, not only a service organization, but is also a provider of many job opportunities.
