Neighborhood Crime Activity

Overview of Activity Plan: How to report a crime

Suggested Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes

Outcomes: Students will learn the vocabulary and grammar phrases from the interview at the end of Episode 5, Lost and Found. They will know how to use the vocabulary and the phrases.

Watching and Listening:

Watch the interview at the end of the episode and listen carefully to the police officer’s comments and advice.

Procedure: Have students draw maps of their neighborhoods, including stores, churches, schools, offices, etc. that are in their vicinity (within a five mile radius). Next, ask the students to mark the areas that they think are safe. Then, ask them to mark the areas that are not safe. Ask them to tell the class why they think certain areas are not safe.

Writing Activity: Help students write a letter to a police officer inviting him/her to visit the class to talk about neighborhood crime and to answer questions pertaining to neighborhood crime.
