Community College Activity

Overview of Activity Plan: Understanding the community college system

Suggested Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes

Outcomes: The students will learn the history of the community college system and the need for it today.

Watching and Listening: Before watching the video, the teacher needs to inform the students that they will be hearing the history of the community college system and how it got its start. Instruct them to listen for the various ways that people use the community colleges.

Procedure: The students will list the reasons that people attend community colleges and some of the classes that are offered. The teacher will write the lists on the board. The students will understand the need and importance of community colleges. They will also realize that they are participating in a very valuable part of the American culture.

Writing Activity: The students will write about their individual reasons for attending community college, and what they hope to gain from the experience.
