COMINGS AND GOINGS
Preparation for Major Life Changes Activity
Overview of Activity Plan: Taking care of legal affairs before death
Suggested Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes
Outcomes: The students will understand the importance of planning ahead legally before deaths occur in families.
Watching and Listening: Before watching the interview with the students, the teacher should prepare the students of the nature of the interview. Inform them that in the United States there are legal matters that should be handled before death. Explain that some situations require that very difficult decisions need to be made.
Procedure: After the video, ask the students if this particular legal practice occurs in their countries. Engage the students in a conversation about how these decisions are handled in their countries. Encourage them to discuss their various cultures’ ways of handling these pre-death decisions. Often, a lively discussion ensues.
Writing Activity: The students should write a brief description of how one is expected to react in his/her country when death is imminent. If a student has experienced a similar situation, he/she should write about that.
