OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
Health and Safety in the Workplace Activity
Overview of Activity: Students will know that there are laws to protect their health and safety in the workplace.
Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes
Outcomes: The students will know the name of the agency in North Carolina that protects their welfare in the workplace. They will also know when to contact the agency and how to contact it.
Watching and Listening: Before watching the video together, the teacher will instruct the students to watch and listen to understand who needs to know the rules of safety in the workplace and how those rules are learned and accessed.
Procedure: The students are asked to remember times when they have felt they were in danger at their jobs. The question can apply to jobs in the U.S. or to jobs in their native countries.
Writing Activity: Record the safety issues on the board. Help the class to determine the kinds of jobs that are the most dangerous: construction, landscaping, factory work, etc. Then, choose one job and write to the Occupational Health and Safety Department of North Carolina for rules that apply to that particular workplace.
