UNITED WE STAND

Organizing Neighborhood Association Activity

Overview of Activity Plan: Defining and creating a neighborhood organization

Suggested Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes

Outcomes: The students will understand the meaning of a neighborhood organization and will also collect ideas about how to start an organization in their own neighborhoods

Watching and Listening: Before watching the interview with the students, ask for a show of hands to see if anyone lives in a neighborhood with an organization. If not, tell the students to listen closely because they may want to develop an association with their neighbors.

Procedure: Place the students into small groups and ask them to imagine that they all live in the same neighborhood. Have them discuss the areas of concern that they have and ask them to, as a group, try to think of ways to help them respond to their concerns.

Writing Activity: Ask the individuals to list the concerns that they discussed in their groups. Encourage them, in complete sentences, to tell how their group would try to correct the problems.
