Accessing Counseling and Social Services Activity
Overview of Activity: Understanding that counseling and discussion of problems is available to everyone
Suggested Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes
Outcomes: The students will know where to find counseling services that will help them with their personal problems.
Watching and Listening: The teacher will enact a discussion about the reasons some young people may commit crimes. Then, the class and the teacher will watch the video together and add new comments to the previous discussion.
Procedures: The students are asked to name crimes that are usually committed by young people. Then, they are asked to tell why they think these crimes were committed.
Activity: The teacher will write three categories on the board or overhead. The categories will be: Kinds of Crime in Your Neighborhood, Where You Have Seen Crime in Your Neighborhood, Who You Think Committed the Crime (adults or teenagers). Together, the class will think of the kinds of crime committed, where the crime was committed, and then, what age group possibly committed the crime. Next, have a class discussion about any action that the residents can take to prevent crime.
If possible, visit a counseling site and interview a counselor to get a profile of their customers.
