NO VACANCY

Fair Housing Activity

Overview of Activity: Accessing fair housing agencies; knowing rights

Suggested Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes

Outcomes: Students will know that housing is available to everyone, and they will know how to find out about their rights.

Watching and Listening: The teacher will instruct the students to think about the meaning of “fair housing” as they watch the interview with the teacher.

Procedure: The teacher will bring classified ad pages about housing from the local newspaper. The students will be given the ads and asked to select a house or an apartment that they would like to inquire about.

Activity: After studying the ads, the students will think of questions that they would like to ask the landlord or realtor about the house. Then, they will make a list of questions that the landlord or realtor might ask them. After reading both sets of questions to the class, the teacher will help the class decide which questions are “fair” and which questions are not “fair.”
