Protecting the Buyer Activity

Overview of Activity: How the Better Business Bureau protects buyers

Suggested Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes

Outcomes: Students will know how to locate the Better Business Bureau and how to use its services as a buyer protection agency.

Watching and Listening: Students and teacher watch the Culture Clip and review any new vocabulary.

Procedure: The teacher will select a student to help demonstrate how a person can be misled when making a purchase or convinced to purchase an unnecessary item. The teacher will act as the sales person.

Activity: Students will be asked to think of incidents when a “scam” could occur. The students should be assigned a partner. The pairs will then choose a “scam” and act it out for the class. Remind the class that a “scam” can be an offer from a telemarketer. The class will then offer suggestions of help to the buyer.

At the end of the lesson, the teacher will give the class the telephone number of the local Better Business Bureau.
