Overview of Activity: How to look for a job

Suggested Time Allowance: 5-10 minutes

Outcomes: After the students and the teacher review the interview from Episode 1, Opening Day, students will have a better understanding of what a Career Center does and how it can help them write a resume, fill out an application, and prepare for an interview.

Watching and Listening: Before beginning the lesson, students and teacher should watch the interview together and pay special attention to the vocabulary words and phrases that the interviewer and interviewee use.

Procedure: Discuss the 4 areas that a Career Center offers as help to someone in a job search. Make sure that the students know the meaning of the words.

1. Career Search

2. Help with writing resumes and help with filling out the job applications

3. Interviewing help

4. Helping the student to find a job

Discuss the other services available at a Career Center.

Activity: Bring headlines about the economy from a newspaper. Ask the class to determine whether the headlines refer to national, state, or local issues. Then, discuss how the different headlines and issues can affect the job search.
