A Sample Welcome Letter/Course Navigation Guide

A Sample Welcome Letter (in this example the course is being offered in Blackboard).

Welcome to this course. Please complete the following introduction to your virtual classroom. By the time you're done with this list, you'll have "met" your instructor, created a personal home page, and taken a thorough tour of your course website.

Click the Course Information button in your course site. This will be your main resource for information through out the period of this course. In the resulting folders and documents, read the "Course Navigation Guide," the "Syllabus," the "How this Course Works" document, and the general course schedule.

Click the Staff Information button. Visit your instructor's page and read what they've written. Print or copy the contact information listed there and keep it by the computer you will use for the course or with your other course materials.

Click the Assignments button. Review the "General Guidelines for Completing Assignments" carefully. Browse through the weekly folders to get an idea of what the major assignments in the course will be.

Click the Student Resources button. This takes you to CPCC's eLearning website. Visit the online eLearning Student Orientation, All the information you need to be successful in the online environment is contained in these five Modules.

Click the Help! button This is a very important page for information on how to get technical and academic support. Explore the Student Support, Netiquette, and Disability Services links on the left-hand navigation column.
Click on the Help Desk link in the center of the page for answers to technicalolgy questions and where to find technical support.

In the Tools area, click the Communication button, then the "Send E-Mail" icon. From the list of people involved with the course, select your instructor and send him/her an introductory message.

Return to the Communication options. This time, visit the "Discussion Board." Choose the "Student Coffeehouse" forum. Post an introductory message to your fellow students.

In the Tools area, click the Tools button. Visit two of the links here. First, read the "User Manual" to find out more about how Blackboard works. Second, click the "Homepage" link. Your last assignment is to create a homepage for yourself. This is a second place where you can introduce yourself to classmates. Include information about what you are currently teaching and what brought you to the teaching profession. You can also attach a picture if you have one in digital format or some of your favorite Internet links. When you are finished, visit other students' pages by clicking on the "Communication" link, and then "Roster."
