Linda White_1 COM231: Public Speaking – Teleweb
Linda White, Instructor - Arts and Communication Division

I began as a full time instructor in Communication in 1992. My first experience with "distance" learning began in 1999 with a telecourse in Public Speaking. This has transitioned into a "teleweb" with strong support using Blackboard to provide additional resources to students and as a means of direct communication with students via email and "announcements". For this spring’s teleweb classes, I have developed a series of online orientation lessons for the teleweb classes.

Linda also incorporates Blackboard into on campus classes as well. Students have access to the same resources as teleweb students and are using Discussion Board to post their speech topics, check email and announcements for class information. With these communication tools, she tells students that now there’s no place to hide!

Terina Lathe is currently Discipline Chair of Sociology and Psychology and an Instructor of Sociology. She has taught at CPCC since 2000, and has been teaching distance education classes since 1998. Just as the technology has changed, so has her approach to and understanding of e-Learning. As a result of her studies in the NCSU’s Adult and Community College Education Ed.D program, she has challenged herself to incorporate and encourage critical thinking and collaborative learning within and through her online classes. "Some things stay the same,"she says. "For example, I always use Discussion Boards, every semester! But things will likewise change, hopefully reflecting my own thoughts about the power, potential, and responsibility associated with teaching online."
