Volunteer Tutors

Volunteer tutors provide assistance to students working on basic skills within Community Development. Tutors work under the direction of instructors on duty in the labs or classrooms and are welcome to donate as much or as little time as they would like.

Volunteer tutors are an important part of Community Development programs and provide additional support and assistance for struggling students. No formal instructional training  or teaching experience is necessary to be a tutor. New volunteer training can be completed online. Tutors may choose to drop in and tutor any available student or may wish to pair with a specific student at a scheduled time.

Areas of  tutor support include basic reading and math through high school subject areas of instruction.  Tutors may also offer support in many of our English as a second language classes. Generally, tutors are encouraged to tutor in instructional areas of their choosing with consideration for proficiency.

Student populations are quite diverse and range in age from sixteen through older senior adults. Many cultural backgrounds  are represented in the student populations.  Academic levels of students range widely.  Students with very limited reading, writing, and English comprehension skills are found along with those studying for  high school diplomas.
