Family Literacy Programs at CPCC

CPCC’s Family-Focused Literacy Programs are designed to offer parents initial English language instruction or GED preparation, basic employment skills and parental support to help families reach educational goals and economic independence.

Comprehensive Family Literacy programs are 16 to 22 hours a week with four components:

*       Adult Education: English language instruction addresses specific language needs for basic communication skills to fulfill responsibilities as parents and family members in the community.  GED instruction allows parents to prepare to take the GED exam.

*       Parenting Education: Information and skill-building opportunities are offered to parents to recognize their strengths and develop parenting skills and life competencies.

*       Parent and Child Together Time (PACT Time): Parents enter their child’s classroom or school and experience their child’s learning through interactive activities.  Coaching, discussing and debriefing are key elements in Parent Education and PACT time.

*       Child’s general education

All of these components are strongly connected to provide a whole family approach to literacy.

Family-Focused Literacy Programs are from 6 to 12 hours a week with a minimum of two components, Adult Education (ESL or GED) and Parenting Education.

Family Literacy Pathways Programs are 6 to 12 hours a week with a minimum of three components, English as a second language, Parenting Education and a job training program.  Currently, students can study to prepare to enter jobs in woodworking, 10-Key and hospitality.
