Q. How much do classes costs?
A.  The majority of Basic Skills courses have no direct cost to students

Q.Where do I go to attend classes?

A. The Basic Skills Information Center at Central Campus, Kratt Building Room 104 is the starting point. There you can get all the information you need regarding Basic Skills programs.

Q. When do classes start?
A. You can get the dates information for the present semester at the Basic Skills Information Center (704-330-6129).

Q. Do you have night classes?
A. Most programs do offer night classes. Check the class schedule (online or download) for listings. The course prefixes for Basic Skills classes are:

Q. Do you have weekend classes?
A. AHSD, GED & ABE do not offer classes on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. The ESL program does not offer classes on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday

Q. What credentials do I earn?
A. You can get a GED certificate or an AHS diploma.

Q.  How can I volunteer to help?

Q. Where can I get tutoring for the GED tests?
A. The ABLE Centers located at Dowd YMCA and West Campus offer individualized instruction for students who are struggling in a specific area.

Q. Can I get tutoring for the GED at a distance?
A. CPCC offers an online GED preparation course. Information on this online course is available at the Basic Skills Intake office (KR104, 704-330-6129), and during Basic Skills Orientation. Also, Basic Skills broadcasts GED Connections through CPCC TV.

Adult High School Diploma

Q. Is an Adult High School Diploma the same as the GED?
A. A GED is a certification of completion.  In that sense is equivalent to  an HS Diploma.

Q. I have a certificate diploma. How do I get an official diploma?
A. A certificate diploma means that you have taken all necessary classes for high school completion, but you have not passed all of the North Carolina Competency Tests (NCCT). Any high school level student with NC picture ID is eligible to take the NCCT.

Q. I am 16 or 17 years old. How do I register for Adult High School?
A. Our policy has changed.  You must be 18 years of age to register for AHSD.  However, 16 and 17 year olds may register for our GED program, provided that they first see Mr. Kenny Clontz at Overcash building room 210 to get a minor release form authorized. This must be done prior to register into any Basic Skills course (Including the Orientation).

Q. I am 18 or older. How do I register for Adult High School?

Q. Can I transfer AHSD class credits back to my high school?
A. No. AHSD course credits cannot be transferred to another institution. You cannot attend AHSD and public high school at the same time.

Q. I need only 1/2 credit in a subject. Can I earn a half credit in AHSD?
A. We do not offer half credits. You must earn a full credit for each course.

Q. Does AHSD offer foreign languages?
A. No.

Q. I need algebra to graduate. Can I take only that one course?
A. Yes. After our counselor evaluates your transcript, we will help you register for the courses you need to complete the 20 credits required for your high school diploma.

Q. Do I have to attend class or can I just take tests?
A. You must attend traditional classes or you have the option of online and lab classes.

Q. Once I complete all of the credits, will I get a diploma from my high school?
A. Upon graduation you will have earned a Charlotte-Mecklenberg High School Diploma from Central Piedmont Community College.

Q. When is graduation?
A. The Adult High School graduation ceremony is held once a year in May. Fall and Summer graduates from the previous year, as well as current Spring graduates, are invited to participate. Information containing ceremony details is sent to graduates and potential graduates in the months prior to the ceremony. See the Graduation site for more information.

Q. How many credits do I need to graduate?
A. You need to fulfill 20 credit units with the AHSD to earn a Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Diploma. Some of your credits may transfer from your last school attended. After the mandatory orientation, you will see our counselor for complete course details.
