As part of a special community outreach project, CPCC invited youngsters associated with Bright Blessings (formerly Birthday Blessings), a local non-profit organization that brings birthday joy and support to homeless children, to a free performance of its 2011 Summer Theatre Children&rsquo;s Show &ndash; &ldquo;Alice in Wonderland, Jr.&rdquo;</span></p><p><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px; "><span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:

A naming ceremony will be held at the campus this fall to honor the couple&rsquo;s generosity and philanthropic spirit.</span></p><p><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; "><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Arial;

font-family:Arial">Five North Carolina colleges are collaborating as part of a national effort to devise and share new approaches to help more young people obtain a degree, certificate or credential.</span><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> </span><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Arial">The schools will share a $500,000 twelve-month planning grant to launch the five-year project in North Carolina. Participating colleges include Central Piedmont Community College, Guilford Technical Community College, Davidson County Community College, Martin Community College and Wake Technical Community College. The North Carolina Completion By Design partners will collaborate on the design and implementation of a comprehensive model to increase the number of low income, young adults who complete their college education.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">&nbsp; </span>The model will be piloted at the five colleges and eventually scaled up across the state in partnership with the North Carolina Community College System.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Arial"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;
font-family:Arial">The North Carolina partnership is one of four chosen for the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">Completion by Design</i> project, which is supported by the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation. The colleges were selected because of their innovative ideas on improving the completion rates on their campuses. They were picked for the project after a rigorous competition that was announced last October at the White House Summit on Community Colleges.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Arial"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;

font-family:Arial">Today, community colleges serve nearly 11 million students, and enrollment has surged as the recession caused many Americans to return for additional training and education. Community colleges also are evolving to serve today&rsquo;s students, who often are older and work full- or part-time to support families while attending school to obtain a degree or credential.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;
font-family:Arial"></span><span style="font-size:11.0pt;
font-family:Arial">It&rsquo;s vital that these students achieve their education goals. A report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce forecasts that, by 2018, 63 percent of jobs will require at least some postsecondary education. The report also shows that, without a dramatic change in course, the labor market will be short three million educated workers over the next eight years.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;

As a result, the organization has awarded CPCC a $250,000 grant to share and implement its OSPLS with seven other peer institutions located across the state and the United States in mid-May to boost student success at their campuses.</span></p>  <p class="storyhead" style="margin-top:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:6.0pt;

Spearheaded by EDUCAUSE and supported by the League for Innovation in the Community College, the International Association for Online Learning and the Council of Chief State School Officers, NGLC provides investment capital &ndash; in the form of grants &ndash; to colleges and universities that have developed technological tools and applications that support student completion and success. Funding for NGLC is provided by the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The tool is comprised of four integrated components, including an orientation course and online student profile, as well as multiple student assessment exams and staff professional development opportunities. The system&rsquo;s assessments allow students to become more self-aware of their personality traits and career aspirations, while providing faculty and academic counselors with a valuable communication tool that gives them the information they need to best guide the student toward academic and professional success.</span></p>  <p class="storyhead" style="margin-top:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:6.0pt;

Rogers, co-founder and senior vice president of Flagship Capital Partners, is the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Richard H. Hagemeyer Educational Advancement Award. </span><span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:Arial;font-weight:normal;

After serving in the armed services, he pursued a real estate career, working for The Ervin Co., as an analyst and area manager. As a consummate lifelong learner, he enrolled at CPCC in 1973 to hone his commercial real estate and investment knowledge, graduating in 1977 with an associate degree in general education. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:Arial;font-weight:normal;

He has served as president for the Athletic Foundation at UNC, Charlotte Region Commercial Board of Realtors, Leadership Charlotte, American Lung Association and the Charlotte Pops Orchestra of the Charlotte Symphony.     <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; ">The Small Business Administration (SBA), North Carolina Military Business Center (NCMBC) and SBTDC Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) will conduct a free workshop for woman-owned small businesses (WOSB) at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) on June 7 from 9 &ndash; 10:30 a.m. in the Hall Professional Development Building, Room 215 on its Central Campus.</span></p><p><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; "><span style="font-size:11.0pt;
font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial-BoldMT-Identity-H;color:black">The federal government has recently authorized &ldquo;set aside&rdquo; contract opportunities for WOSBs in defined industries that will significantly increase opportunities for these businesses in the federal marketplace.</span></span></p><p><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; "><span style="font-size:11.0pt;

font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial-BoldMT-Identity-H;color:black">&ldquo;As a growing force woman-owned businesses play a critical role in our economy,&rdquo; said Renee Hode, director of the Institute for Entrepreneurship. &ldquo;The new rule change is a win for these companies; one that will provide well-deserved opportunities for woman-owned businesses to expand through federal contracting.&rdquo;<br style="mso-special-character:line-break" />  </span></p><p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;
font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial-BoldMT-Identity-H;color:black">The WOSB training will help businesses that meet the designated criteria to better understand the policy changes and how the new rules could benefit their companies. The WOSB program will significantly benefit businesses that operate within the 83 NAICS codes (North American Industry Classification System) and that meet the strict ownership and management criteria included in the new WOSB program. The program, and this training, will benefit WOSBs that already do federal prime or sub-contracting and can demonstrate the experience and past performance necessary to win contracts. The training will also provide the tools to help those businesses that qualify to register, certify, preposition and ultimately compete for and win federal contracts under this program.<br style="mso-special-character:line-break" />  </span></p><p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;

font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial">Yamamoto served as Resident Conductor of the Charlotte Symphony for six seasons; he was appointed to the post by former Music Director Christof Perick. During his time with the Symphony, he collaborated with CPCC, the Mint Museum of Fine Art, Davidson College and film entrepreneurs George Cochran and Hobart Bell in 2008 to bring the production &ldquo;Warhol on the Waterfront&rdquo; to life for audience members. The piece featured video images of Andy Warhol works in interactive presentation with Philip Glass&rsquo;s &ldquo;Third Symphony.&rdquo; The collaboration brought together the minimalist conceptions of both artists. </span><span style="font-size:11.0pt;
font-family:Arial">The project was the inspiration for the symphony's ongoing &quot;Orchestra on Campus&quot; project at CPCC.</span><span style="font-size:

mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial">&ldquo;CPCC is honored to have Rep. Tillis speak at this year&rsquo;s commencement ceremony,&rdquo; said Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC. &ldquo;Rep. Tillis&rsquo;s background is quite varied, he has experience serving in leadership roles, overseeing a</span><span style="font-size:11.0pt;

    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; ">Central Piedmont Community College&rsquo;s (CPCC) Baking and Pastry Arts (BPA) Club has created a new scholarship &ndash; the George Schmaren Baking and Pastry Arts Scholarship &ndash; to provide funding for students seeking a career in the culinary arts. The College is currently accepting applications for this $5,000 scholarship, which is an academic scholarship for an associate&rsquo;s degree in Baking and Pastry Arts at CPCC. The scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior or recent graduate who plans to enroll in the program as a full-time student. The scholarship funds may be applied toward registration as well as the purchase of books, tools, uniforms and supplies.</span></p><p><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; "><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:
Arial">Named after past BPA Instructor George Schmaren, the scholarship is 100 percent funded through the BPA Club&rsquo;s annual fundraising efforts. The club is an active member of the Charlotte region, &ldquo;baking a better community&rdquo; by engaging in service learning activities and sponsoring educational opportunities &ndash; like the George Schmaren Scholarship &ndash; that make a difference in the lives of others.<br /> <br /> To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must meet CPCC&rsquo;s admissions and eligibility requirements.
