CPCC launches Sustainability Technologies Degree program

The Center for Sustainability at CPCC is pleased to add an Associate in Applied Science – Sustainability Technologies degree to its list of curriculum programs. The addition makes CPCC the only community college in the North Carolina Community College System to offer students a Sustainability Technologies degree program.

“CPCC is committed to building a strong local workforce of professionals equipped with the skills needed to succeed in such high-demand fields as alternative energy and environmental engineering,” says Ernie McLaney, executive director for CPCC’s Center for Sustainability. “More and more companies are turning to ‘green’ practices to lower their carbon footprint, conserve energy and reduce expenses. Our new program will help meet this growing trend and enable businesses to operate more efficiently and in a more environmentally sensitive manner.”

The 70-credit hour degree program will include general education classes, core environmental courses, major courses and technical electives. Students will have the option of selecting from program tracks in environmental engineering technology, sustainable manufacturing and alternative energy. These tracks will help students prepare for careers in such fields as environmental engineering, alternative energy green construction and sustainable manufacturing.

In addition to the AAS degree program, a series of continuing education (non-credit) classes are offered to the public on such topics as biodiesel, organic gardening, urban homesteading, solar electricity, creating wildlife habitats, and others.

The Sustainability Technologies degree program at CPCC is currently training students for careers in multiple concentrations. CPCC encourages all interested applicants meet with a CPCC faculty advisor prior to registration to ensure all pre-requisites are fulfilled.
