ENV 7135 provides an overview of the history and development of the biofuels industry, including such issues as food vs. fuel and the regulatory and incentive landscape. The focus is on biodiesel and straight vegetable oil use, with a survey of other biofuels and feedstock technology. This class is also relevant to students who would like to make their own fuel. Activities will include discussions on issues such as basic chemistry, lab
demonstrations of making and testing fuel, and field trips to small and large refineries in North Carolina.

About the Instructor
Instructor

Instructor John Malpeli is a chemist who currently leads the production and quality controls at North Carolina’s largest biodiesel refinery - Foothills Bio-Engineers, in Lenoir, N.C.  John has experience in homebrew biodiesel and commercial biodiesel production.
He previously worked in the pharmaceutical industry and holds a B.S. in chemistry from Winthrop University.
