1 LEP 6007 Introduction to ESL Literacy Skills

This level provides students with English skills to understand frequently used words in contexts and very simple phrases with some repetition.

Students will be able to recognize and read and write numbers and letters in addition to a limited number of basic sight words and simple sentences or phrases.  Students will be able to write basic personal information when requested.

This level teaches students to recognize common forms of print found in the home, workplace, and community.  Technology skills are integrated into instruction whenever possible.

2 LEP 6008 Low Beginning ESL Skills

This level provides students with English skills to understand frequently used words in context and simple phrases and respond to questions using these phrases.

Students will be able to read and understand sight words, phrases and simple sentences.  Students will be able to complete simple personal information or workplace forms.  Technology skills are integrated into instruction whenever possible.

3 LEP 6009 High Beginning ESL Skills

This level provides students with English skills to understand simple acquired phrases and to ask and respond to questions using such phrases.

Students will be able to read and comprehend simple materials on familiar subjects with familiar vocabulary and to write simple notes and messages on familiar situations.  Students will be able to interpret simple directions and schedules in English.

This level prepares students to handle routine entry-level positions which involve some written or oral English communication and in which the job tasks can be demonstrated.  Technology skills are integrated into instruction whenever possible.

4 LEP 6010 Low Intermediate ESL Skills

This level provides the students with English skills to be able to meet basic survival and social needs in English.  This level will develop the skills to enable students to communicate about familiar subjects and to use context to determine meaning.

Students will be able to read texts on familiar subjects with clear main ideas and will be able to write very simple paragraphs.  in addition, the students will have the skills to complete forms needed for employment or to access community services.

This level prepares students so that they will be able to handle routine entry-level positions in the workplace that involve following simple oral and written communication and using basic technology.

5 LEP 6011 High Intermediate ESL Skills

This level provides students with skills so that they can function independently to meet most survival needs in English.

Students will be able to read simple texts which require the ability to make simple inferences and write simple narrative descriptions with some grammatical errors.  Their ability to communicate on the telephone about familiar topics will be enhanced.

This level prepares students to meet work or civic participation demands that require basic reading, writing and interacting with the public.

6 LEP 6012 Low Advanced ESL Skills

This level will build skills for students to understand and participate effectively in most routine social and work situations in English.  This level will enable students to read authentic materials on everyday subjects, as well as be able to interpret and write with some proficiency with few grammatical errors.

Students will achieve a high ability to expand on basic ideas, to clarify meaning, and to understand most conversations and other media.

Courses within this level should prepare students to handle diverse job or community involvement situations and assist with professional growth and/or transition to higher education.
