This summer, the CPCC Harper Campus is offering introductory classes in a number of high-demand technical trade fields, including welding, construction trades, advertising and graphic design, graphic arts, and non-destructive examination and testing.
Want to tackle your own home improvement projects? Take advantage of the short-term classes offered on topics such as ceramic tile installation, light carpentry and deck building.
So whether you’re seeking your first job, pursuing a career change, wanting to advance your current career, or just want to learn a home improvement skill, let the CPCC Harper Campus put you on the path to success.

SMAW FULL PENETRATION PIPE

This condensed class is designed to take an advanced level welder and prep them for a full penetration on 6”diameter schedule 80 !6G! pipe test with backing using the SMAW(E7018 electrodes) process on carbon steel. Students will be required to bring all necessary safety and welding gear. Student accident insurance is required. All necessary book, literature, and handouts will be provided for the class. American Welding Society, AWS, certification is provided as a separate class after completion. (WLX-7108).
 
GTAW PIPE

This condensed class is designed to take an entry level welder and prep them for a full penetration “6G” or “6F 2”Dia Schedule 80 pipe using the GTAW(ER70 S-2) process on carbon steel. Students will be required to bring all necessary safety and welding gear and support equipment(grinders, etc.). Student accident insurance is required. All necessary book, literature, and handouts will be provided for the class. American Welding Society, AWS, certification is provided as a separate class after completion.
 
AWS, AMERICAN WELDING SOCIETY CERTIFICATIONTEST, PIPE 6G OR 6F

This class covers testing certification under the American Welding Society, AWS. This is a 6G or 6F test on pipe and lead by one of our AWS Certified Welding Inspectors. Students will be responsible for their own appropriate welding (hand tools, grinder, etc) and safety gear (mask, gloves, etc) Student Accident Insurance is required to attend this class. Plate Welding
SMAW (STICK) WELDING-FLAT, HORIZONTAL, VERTICAL

BRICKLAYING BASICS
MAS 7001
A course covering the fundamental techniques and practice in the building of
brick walls, steps, corners, chimneys, and other brick structures. Emphasis is
placed on the correct use of the mason’s trowel, level, plumb line and tape
measure. Job safety and safe work habits will be covered.

INTRODUCTIONTO BRICK MASONRY

BrickMasonry Training is an intensive program designed to teach participants
the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to enter and advance in the
brick mason’s trade.Major emphasis is placed on participant’s mastery of the
correct procedures, methods, & techniques utilized in laying brick & block. In
addition to instruction in the correct use of equipment, materials, and tools,
participants will have extensive practice in laying brick and block with individualized
instruction in order to help them develop their skill proficiency and
production speed. The different types and uses of concrete mixing and joints are
also covered. During the final weeks of the course, participants will have the
opportunity to further develop their skills.

CODE QUALIFICATION - BUILDING LEVEL II COD7102 
The Building Level II course is designed for the education and training of the Building Level II code enforcement official who has the responsibility of inspecting all types of construction up to 60,000 square feet in size and is built upon information presented in the Building Level I Standard Inspection course. Upon completion, course participants will have a better understanding of the Building Code and the Accessibility Code of the North Carolina State Building Code and will be able to apply the Code in the inspection field. In addition, with the successful completion of the Building Level II and the Law and Administration courses in conjunction with other education and experience requirements specified by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board, course participants will be eligible to take the Building Level II State examination for inspector certification.

The Mechanical Level II course is designed for the education and training of the Mechanical Level II code enforcement official who has the responsibility of inspecting mechanical installations in all types of construction up to 60,000 square feet in size and is built upon information presented in the Mechanical Level I Standard Inspection course. Upon completion, course participants will have a better understanding of the Mechanical Code and the Fuel Gas Code of the North Carolina State Building Code and will be able to apply the Code in the inspection field. In addition, with the successful completion of the Mechanical Level II and the Law and Administration courses in conjunction with other education and experience requirements specified by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board, course participants will be eligible to take the Mechanical Level II State examination for inspector certification.

Upon completion, course participants will have a better understanding of the Plumbing Code of the North Carolina State Building Code and will be able to apply the Code in the inspection field. In addition, with the successful completion of the Plumbing Level II and the Law and Administration courses in conjunction with other education and experience requirements specified by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board, course participants will be eligible to take the Plumbing Level II State examination for inspector certification.

WORK ZONE FLAGGERTRAINING

This workshop is designed to train participants to be effective flaggers by teaching the basics of flagging operations and procedures. Our class is approved and meets the requirements of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The successful student receives the National Safety Council Certificate of Completion and wallet card, plus a laminated reference guide. Flagger certification is good for three years. By July 1, 2009, all flaggers in North Carolina must be trained in a course approved by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATIONS

Botanical imagery is used throughout the design world and has been a staple in design for thousands of years. In the last ten years there has been a renaissance of interest in botanical painting. This class is for those people who love the natural world and would like to try their hand at creating their own botanical illustrations. The class will cover drawing and painting flowers, fruit and vegetables using traditional watercolor techniques.

Our Mac labs provide state of the art technology to learn Photoshop in a Graphics environment. Knowledge of a Macintosh is not required for this class, since basic instruction will be given.

Non-destructive Examination and Testing

LIQUID PENETRANTTESTING
NDX7010
PT is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to locate surface breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics). Penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials, but for inspection of ferrous components magnetic-particle inspection is preferred for its subsurface detection capability. PT is used to detect casting and forging defects, cracks, and leaks in new products, and fatigue cracks on in-service components. The courses will meet the training requirements of ASNT?s SNT-TC-1A-2001 and CP-189- 2001 Editions. Student Accident Insurance is required to attend this class.
 
MAGNETIC-PARTICLETESTING

The student will learn Magnetic particle inspection process methods for the detection of surface and sub-surface defects in ferrous materials. The courses will meet the training requirements of ASNT?s SNT-TC-1A-2001 and CP-189-2001 Editions. Student Accident Insurance is required to attend this class.
 
INTRODUCTION TO NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING

Non-destructive testing is a high demand fast growing industry. Non-destructive testing (NDT) is an analysis technique used in scientific fields to determine the state or function of a system without the use of invasive approaches like disassembly or failure testing. Because NDT does not require the disabling or sacrifice of the system of interest, it is a highly-valuable technique that saves both money and time in product evaluation, troubleshooting, and research. You will learn about the Common NDT methods. Student Accident Insurance is required to attend this class.
 
ULTRASONICTESTING - LEVEL I
WLX7013
This short course covers the principles of ultrasonics and meets the qualification requirements as defined in SNT-TC-1A and CP-105 for UT Level I. The participant will be capable of performing straight and dual element calibrations, following basic instructions to perform lamination scans and blind sample assessment utilizing both techniques. A basic introduction to angle beam examination is included. Practical aspects of the method are emphasized, as approximately one half the time is allocated for practical applications.
 
ULTRASONICTESTING LEVEL II
WLX7014 
This short course reviews the principles of ultrasonics and meets the qualification requirements as defined in SNT-TC-1A and CP-105 for UT Level II. This class is for homeowners who want to install or repair ceramic tile. Topics include floor preparation, tile selection, layout, installation, and replacement of damaged tiles. This class is hands-on and tuition includes a small assortment of useful tools.
 
DECK BUILDING BASICS

This class is for homeowners and craftworkers who want to build a new deck or repair an existing deck. Topics include basic deck building, building codes for wood decks, handrails, maintenance and repairs. This class is hands-on.
 
LIGHTTRIM CARPENTRY
HOM7006 
This class is for homeowners who want to learn the basics of trim carpentry. Topics to include the cutting and installation of base board, chair rail and crown molding. This class will be hands on but will not include the use of any power tools.

FLEXOGRAPHIC CONCEPTS

This course is a hands-on overview of Flexography. Topics include prepress, plate-making, plate mounting and press work. Students will participate in producing a label from design to print.

SCREEN PRINTING CONCEPTS

This Screen Printing overview class is designed for anyone that wants to learn more about the Screen Printing process. Our Graphics Arts and Imaging Technology staff will walk you through this class where you will get to go from concept to printed product. We keep the class size small to maximize the hands on time. If you work in any aspect of printing this is a good textile based class for both beginner and novice and anyone wanting to learn more.

OFFSET CONCEPTS

Our overview class for offset litho is designed for anyone that wants to learn more about the offset printing process. This class features hands on training in offset prepress and printing as well as an overview of the industry as a whole. Our Graphics Arts and Imaging Technology staff will walk you through the offset printing process from concept to actual printed product. We keep the class size small to maximize the hands on time. If you work in any aspect of printing this is a good offset overview class.

PHOTOSHOP FUNDAMENTALS

Photoshop Fundamentals is a great starting point if you’re just beginning to learn Adobe Photoshop.
