The German Language & Culture Foundation of Charlotte, N.C., has awarded two, $1,750 scholarships to two CPCC students. The funding will help pay for costs associated with each student’s study abroad excursion to Germany in July, including German language classes.

The gift to the College reinforces the German Language & Culture Foundation’s commitment to supporting projects that help create long-term friendships and promote a better understanding between the people of German-speaking countries and the Charlotte metro region. Charlotte is a mecca for German-based business operations; there are more then 250 German companies in the Queen City, employing over 15,000 people.

“Given the number of German-based employers in Mecklenburg County, it’s important that we emphasize the study of Germany, including its language, culture and business practices,” said Daniela Weinert, CPCC German instructor and program chair. “These local companies look favorably on qualified German-speaking job seekers. Therefore it’s imperative that the College educates its students in this region of the world, to better prepare them for a workforce where having an understanding of Germany and its many resources is a valuable asset.”

CPCC students Randall Mabeus and Emily Kersey were named the 2010 German Language & Culture Foundation Scholarship recipients. Randall has studied German for four semesters at CPCC and Emily is a freshman/global studies major who studied the language extensively in high school.

This year marks the second consecutive year that the Foundation has bestowed a scholarship to a CPCC student. Last year, the Foundation gave a $1,750 scholarship to a CPCC student participating in the College’s 2009 study abroad program in Germany.
