Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) will hold a special event on Thursday, May 20, 2010 to recognize Mayor Anthony Foxx, C.D. Spangler Jr. and the inaugural recipients of The Anthony Foxx Scholars Program at CPCC.
The Anthony Foxx Scholars Program is a partnership between CPCC and West Charlotte High School designed to help African-American males overcome financial obstacles and receive the assistance needed to earn their associates degree. Every African-American male who graduates from West Charlotte High School and enrolls at CPCC receives a $1,000 scholarship.
“We’re thankful for Mr. Spangler’s gift, which is providing this group of deserving West Charlotte graduates with a scholarship to begin their educational journey at CPCC. We hope this inspires them to become the next generation of community leaders like Mayor Foxx,” said Dr. Tony Zeiss, President of CPCC.
The Anthony Foxx Scholars Program is funded through a grant from the C.D. Spangler Foundation, established in the 1950s by the Spangler family to support education, religious and other not-for-profit organizations. Mr. Spangler, a Charlotte native and long-time supporter of education, has a special connection to West Charlotte High School dating back to his college years, when he spent a summer building the school while working for his father’s construction company. In addition, Mr. Spangler’s two daughters are graduates of West Charlotte High School.
Mr. Spangler named the scholarship program for Charlotte’s mayor, Anthony Foxx. Mayor Foxx was raised in Charlotte’s Lincoln Heights neighborhood. He graduated from West Charlotte High School before continuing his education by earning a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College and a J.D. degree from New York University’s School of Law. Mayor Foxx is also a passionate supporter of education, having served on the Mecklenburg County Education Budget Advisory Committee and the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching Foundation Board.
The Anthony Foxx Scholars Program will help African-American male students with their transition to college through support services including: admissions and enrollment counseling, early advising and registration program, financial aid workshops, parent communications, college visitation day, summer bridge program and minority male mentoring program.
