Get Your Geek On: The 5th Annual Geek Fest is Coming to the CPCC Levine Campus

Who said being a geek isn’t chic? The 5th annual Geek Fest is coming to the CPCC Levine Campus (2800 Campus Ridge Road, Matthews, N.C.) on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. THE Geek Fest is a celebration of cutting-edge industry, media, gadgets, hardware, software, services, innovations and education. The event is free and features exciting and fun developments in everything from techno music to robotics, to simulation and game design. CPCC students, college employees and the Charlotte community are encouraged to attend and explore career opportunities in this emerging field.
Available learning tracks will include: eLearning and Training; eMedia - Audio, video, animation; Simulation and Gaming; Mobile Communications and Technologies; and Emerging Technology and Industry
In addition to showcasing many of CPCC’s innovations in technology, The Geek Fest features innovative regional and national businesses and their contributions to new technologies, including the hottest fashions and styles. Activities will include vendor demonstrations, guest speakers, webcasts, video game tournaments, music, contests, FREE stuff and more. General content and activities will run from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Professional-focused content and activities will be held from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
In addition, THE Geek Fest will feature information on various CPCC programs including automotive technology, music, computer programming, simulation and game development, engineering, eLearning, and more. Students can find out more about various career opportunities and explore exciting new developments in technology.
Some of the keynote speakers at THE Geek Fest include:
• Louis Foreman, founder and chief executive of Enventys – “Becoming an Everyday Edison – How to Progress from Ideas to Innovations” - Have a great idea? How do you harness it, turn it into reality, and make money from it? This session will introduce attendees to steps they can take to turn ideas into innovations. Foreman is the founder and chief executive of Enventys, an integrated product design and engineering firm with offices in Charlotte and Hong Kong. His is a prolific inventor of nine registered U.S. Patents, and his firm is responsible for the development of well over 150 more. Foreman also serves as the executive producer and judge for a new inventor’s TV show called Everyday Edisons, which appears nationally on PBS stations.
• Tom Wright – “Behind the Scenes of 3D Animation Film Making” – Wright has more than 10 years of experience working for a variety of studios in the CG animation industry. A visual effects artist whose résumé includes working for Dreamworks Animation and Walt Disney Feature Animation, Wright recently wrapped up production on Madagascar 2 and has collaborated on high-level film and television projects with Nickelodeon, Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema. His presentation will provide attendees with a rare look at how the most popular studios take an idea from a simple concept to creation. During the session he will closely inspect each step of the production process, from story visual development to lighting to post-production.
• Mike Moore, Ampmobile Conversions, LLC – “How’s and Why’s of Electrical Vehicles” – As the cost of gasoline increases, the general public is turning more and more to alternative fuel vehicles. During this session, attendees will be introduced to the differences in electric vehicle systems, descriptions of batteries used in transportation and much more.
