CPCC’s Global Issues Forum hosts “30 Mosques in 30 Days” presentation
WHAT: Explore what it means to be a Muslim in America today as blogger Aman Ali presents “30 Mosques in 30 Days – An American Ramadan Road Trip Adventure.” During Ramadan 2010, Islam’s holy month of fasting and reflection, American Muslims Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq journeyed across America, stopping at a different mosque in a different state each evening to break their fasts. During this special event, being sponsored by Central Piedmont Community College’s (CPCC) Global Issues Forum, Ali will share his experiences, painting a diverse portrait of America’s Muslim-American community.
Ali’s journey inspired him to blog about his many experiences, which included praying inside such holy places as the Ground Zero Mosque in Manhattan and visiting the first mosque to be built in the United States – located in Ross, North Dakota. His 13,000-mile trip with Tariq opened his eyes to the diversity of the country’s Muslim-American community as they came face-to-face with Cambodian Muslim victims of the Khmer Rouge (the protagonists of Dave Eggers’ bestselling novel “Zeitoun”), a Pakistani-Mormon couple and many others.
Join us to hear Ali’s first-hand account of his road trip as he provides attendees with a counter-narrative to the monolithic Islam that is often portrayed by today’s media.
