WHAT: The Welding program at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), together with the American Welding Society (AWS), is proud to host the 9th annual Carolina/Virginia Welding Competition this spring. The event will include students from six North Carolina and Virginia Community Colleges, including CPCC, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, Craven Community College, Wilkes Community College, Pitt Community College and Beaufort County Community College.
During the event, beginner and intermediate level students will compete in a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Challenge to test their welding skills and technique. Instructors from CPCC’s Non-Destructive Examination Technology program will judge participants on their ability to weld a V groove butt joint, and cut and bend. All submitted work will be examined for defects using AWS Certification guidelines. The entry with the best appearance and the least amount of defects will receive top honors in the competition.
The day’s festivities will also include an inaugural blacksmithing competition that pairs students up in head-to-head competition. Using only a hammer, participants will have to draw out one end of a 1/2" square x 6" bar to a tapered point within five minutes. Judges will award points for length, symmetry and finish.
CPCC’s Harper Campus offers short-term training in a variety of high-demand technical trade areas such as welding, masonry, construction and non-destructive examination. Individuals seeking to learn a new skill, pursue a career change or advance their career are encouraged to enroll in the campus’ Summer Institute classes. Class registration begins April 23.
