CPCC students receive top honors in Southeast Regional American Culinary Federation Competition
CPCC faculty member awarded prestigious Joseph Amendola Award, students also receive accolades at local Taste of Nation event
The Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) Harris Campus hosted the Southeast Regional American Culinary Federation Competition April 18 – 19. CPCC’s Baking and Pastry Arts (BPA) program students competed against more than 125 participants, representing a variety of community colleges from across the region, for top honors and industry recognition.
The Southeast Regional American Culinary Federation recognized several CPCC BPA students and one faculty member throughout the weekend for their baking talents. They were:
· John Latour – “Best in Show” and two gold medals
· Amanda White – gold medal
· Lisa Borkowski – silver medal
· Amanda Hamilton – silver medal and bronze medal
· Russ Thayer - $2,500 scholarship
· Chef Geoffrey Blount (CPCC faculty member) – runner-up, “Pastry Chef of the Year”
During the event, the Federation also awarded Chef Geoffrey Blount, an instructor in the BPA program, with the prestigious Joseph Amendola Award during the event’s Professionalism Luncheon. The award recognizes a pastry chef or master baker who has devoted their career to the profession and mentoring aspiring young pastry chefs.
In addition to these many accomplishments at the Southeast Regional American Culinary Federation Competition, CPCC’s BPA students also won “Best Table Display” at Taste of Nation, a Charlotte culinary fundraising event that helps benefit hunger-fighting charities.
Central Piedmont Community College is the largest community college in North Carolina, offering close to 300 degree and certification programs, customized corporate training, market-focused continuing education, and special interest classes.
