CPCC responds to budget cuts

last modified Mar 11, 2009 10:28 AM
Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) today announced that it would close on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays this summer and would reduce the number of printed schedules available to the community in response to increased budget constraints. The compressed work week and reduced funding will impact the number of classes the College is able to offer this summer. Additional cuts will include reduction in maintenance and security measures as well as freezes on travel, job openings and merit pay.

“Our enrollment has grown 19 percent in the past 18 months. That growth coupled with the current economic situation is forcing us to cut back wherever we can," explains Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC. "We have had to return $647,000 to the County and over $2 million to the State in this fiscal year. Compressing our summer work week, changing the way we print and distribute our schedules and freezing other ancillary expenses will help the College meet those cuts.”

From May 15 through August 2, all College facilities will be closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, except the following:
·         Harper Campus will be open for scheduled classes only.
·         The Hendrick Center on Levine Campus will be open for scheduled classes only.
·         The Overcash Building on Central Campus will be open for scheduled classes and performances only.
·         The Harris Conference Center will open for scheduled events only.

Other services will not be available at the above locations on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The College will operate on a 40-hour, four-day work week. Office hours of operation will be Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Classes will continue to be scheduled through the evening hours. For specific course information, students should visit http://schedule.cpcc.edu/myschedule/. Select weekend Corporate & Continuing Education courses will be offered at the Harper Campus, the Overcash Building on Central or the Hendrick Center on Levine Campus. Online resources (i.e., classes and registration) will continue to operate on a 24/7 schedule.

As an additional cost savings measure, the College will split its usual class schedule publication for the summer term into two documents, a Course Guide for curriculum students, and a Corporate & Continuing Education (CCE) Schedule. The Course Guide will be available at all campuses. The CCE Schedule will be mailed to select homes and will be available at public libraries and CPCC campuses. Both documents will be available in late April. All class information will also be available online at www.cpcc.edu.

Anyone with questions about the summer hours or class schedules should visit www.cpcc.edu or call 704.330.CPCC (2722).
