Central Piedmont Community College’s (CPCC) Baking and Pastry Arts (BPA) Club has created a new scholarship – the George Schmaren Baking and Pastry Arts Scholarship – to provide funding for students seeking a career in the culinary arts. The College is currently accepting applications for this $5,000 scholarship, which is an academic scholarship for an associate’s degree in Baking and Pastry Arts at CPCC. The scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior or recent graduate who plans to enroll in the program as a full-time student. The scholarship funds may be applied toward registration as well as the purchase of books, tools, uniforms and supplies.

Named after past BPA Instructor George Schmaren, the scholarship is 100 percent funded through the BPA Club’s annual fundraising efforts. The club is an active member of the Charlotte region, “baking a better community” by engaging in service learning activities and sponsoring educational opportunities – like the George Schmaren Scholarship – that make a difference in the lives of others.

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must meet CPCC’s admissions and eligibility requirements. Students and graduates will be selected based on the following criteria:

·       Academic record

·       Leadership and participation in school and community activities

·       Work experience

·       Statement of career and educational aspirations and goals

·       Unusual personal or family circumstances

·       Financial need

Applications must be received no later than April 1, 2011. Students or graduates are responsible for providing two complete sets of application materials.
