The City of Charlotte has begun a major street improvement project that affects the CPCC Central Campus.
During the project, Elizabeth Avenue from Kings Drive to Charlottetowne Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic. Pedestrian traffic will be limited to the north side (the quad side) of the street with three crosswalks to allow pedestrians to access the buildings on the south side (the parking deck side) of Elizabeth Avenue. Every effort will be made to maintain access to all buildings as conveniently as possible, however, there may be limited times when pedestrian traffic will need to be rerouted or restricted in order to complete the construction and to ensure the safety of CPCC students and staff. This project is expected to last approximately ten months.

The end result of this project will be enhanced pedestrian access for Elizabeth Avenue, creation of additional greenscape, relocation of overhead utilities to underground utilities, and the installation of a streetcar line that will eventually run from Presbyterian Hospital to Johnson C. Smith University.
Facilities Service and Marketing Services are working closely with the City of Charlotte to plan alternative means of campus access, and to ensure the campus community is kept informed on the project and its impact on the Central Campus.
Look for more information on this project as it becomes available.
- Elizabeth Ave. (from Kings Dr. to Charlottetown Ave.) will close beginning at 9am on 12/10/07.
- Fencing installation along Elizabeth Ave. will begin at 10am on 12/11/07, and is anticipated to be complete by the end of the week.
- Median construction will take place at the intersection of Elizabeth Ave. and Kings Dr. from 9am – 4pm beginning 12/12/07. Students are urged to use caution when traveling in this area.
CPCC will be conducting repair work on the steps of the main entrance to the Central High Building beginning 12/10/07. Students are asked to use the building entrance at the corner of Elizabeth Ave. and Pease Ln.
One of three Elizabeth Avenue crosswalks on the CPCC Central Campus will close for at least a week beginning Monday, January, 28th. The affected crosswalk is located across from Pease Lane. The closure is necessary to permit the installation of new underground utilities as work progresses on the Elizabeth Avenue construction project.
Students are urged to use caution when walking near this area. The two remaining Elizabeth Avenue crosswalks will continue to operate. They are located across from Taylor Hall and the Student Parking Deck #1, respectively.
Charlottetowne Ave through the Elizabeth Ave intersection will be reduced to two travel lanes (one for each approach) Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 9:00 am. Travel lanes will be shifted to the eastside of Charlottetowne Ave for the installation of a conduit system. The travel lanes will be shifted to the westside of Charlottetowne Ave the following weekend. The travel lanes will be closed for approximately 10 days.
To accommodate construction for the Elizabeth Avenue Business Corridor Project it is necessary to close Torrence Street near the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue. Beginning Wednesday April 30th the 100 Block of South Torrence Street will close for approximately 7 days. On Tuesday May 6th the 200 block of North Torrence Street will close for approximately 5 days. Detours for both closures will be directed to Hawthorne Lane. Please expect delays in these areas.
- The installation of curbing and sidewalks will require frequent changes to pedestrian walking paths near the Overcash and Central High buildings.
- Along Elizabeth Ave., workers will begin the process of relocating overhead electrical and utility lines into newly constructed underground utility banks.
- Rail lines will be installed down the center of Elizabeth Ave. beginning at the intersection of Elizabeth Ave. and Kings Dr., and continuing toward Presbyterian Hospital.
As construction progresses, please expect frequent re-routing of pedestrian walking paths, as well as changes to vehicular traffic patterns along Charlottetowne Ave. and Kings Dr.
Get There….early!
Taking classes at CPCC this semester? If so, leave home early and plan ahead to prepare for congested streets and parking lots.
Due to construction on Elizabeth Avenue, you can expect heavy traffic volume around Central Campus during the first few weeks of classes. Signage alerting you of pedestrian walkways, student parking, and overflow areas will be posted throughout the campus. Local merchants will be enforcing towing, so be sure to park in areas clearly marked for CPCC.
Students at Levine and Cato Campus may also experience heavy volume. Security and volunteers will be available to direct you to designated parking areas.
Overflow parking on Central Campus will be at the following locations:
- <!--[if !supportLists]-->3rd Street between Kings Drive and Charlottetowne Avenue
- <!--[if !supportLists]-->Park Drive /5th Street between Hawthorne Lane and Travis Street
- <!--[if !supportLists]-->The old Armory lot (gravel) on Charlottetowne Avenue between Armory Drive and Park Drive
- <!--[if !supportLists]-->The Little Rock AME Zion Church off of McDowell and 7th Street
You can pick up your decal at any CPCC cashiering window or security office. From August 8-28, parking services will also have a desk in the lobby of the IT building for your convenience from 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m. All you need to show is your paid tuition receipt! You will have until August 29 to get your parking decal.

Parking Deck Update on Central Campus: Student Park Deck 1 and Faculty Deck Impacted by Construction Beginning September 22
Over the next few months, students and faculty on Central Campus will notice some changes and traffic delays as a result of construction to Student Parking Deck 1 and the Employee/Theater Parking Deck. Students and employees can anticipate traffic delays and a decrease in the number of parking spaces in these two lots periodically.
During the construction, the ground level of parking in the employee parking deck will be closed at times. In addition, the entrance from Charlottetowne Avenue to the Student Parking Deck 1 will be closed at times, thus requiring students to enter from 4th street. Motorcycles parking in Student Deck 1 will notice directional signs and barricades for parking during the construction.
These changes will take place beginning September 22. Watch CPCC Today and the CPCC website for more details.
