During his remarks, President Lancaster encouraged graduates to “live and learn.” He stressed that graduation is just the beginning of a lifetime of learning, and he encouraged the graduates to make learning a priority throughout their life. “It’s important to learn something new every day,” stated Lancaster in his address.

CPCC To Dedicate New Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technology

State-of-the-Art Facility Offers Cutting Edge Training and Instruction

On Tuesday, May 22, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and Hendrick Automotive Group will hold a joint dedication of the new Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technology at 2:00 p.m. at the CPCC Levine Campus in Matthews (2800 Campus Ridge Road). This 35,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility will serve as headquarters to many of the College’s training and re-training programs in automotive technology.

Guest speakers at the dedication include Governor Mike Easley, Rick Hendrick, Hendrick Automotive Group Chairman; Matthews Mayor Lee Myers, and CPCC President Dr. Tony Zeiss. Following the dedication, guests will have an opportunity to tour the facility and learn more about the programs at CPCC.

The new facility features six classrooms and six labs with the latest in equipment and technology. The Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technology serves technicians who are seeking updated technical skills through contract training and corporate and continuing education classes, as well as those who aspire to be technicians through curriculum programs.

The Levine Campus program offers the BMW Associate Degree Program, which includes nine BMW factory course credits. Students receive advanced training on BMW’s newest models and systems. In addition, CPCC provides BMW dealerships with manufacturer-trained interns who often obtain employment with the dealership soon after graduation. CPCC partners with Toyota and Lexus dealerships to offer the Toyota Technical Education Network (T-TEN). T-TEN students alternate semesters between learning hands-on Toyota and Lexus repair skills at CPCC and working in dealerships. More than 100 automotive dealerships in the Charlotte region have employed CPCC graduates over the past several years.

CPCC offers opportunities in GM Service Technician training, Toyota Satellite training, AC Delco training, North Carolina Automotive Safety and Emissions Inspection courses, Independent Auto Dealers certification, and customized Electrical and Hybrid courses.

”I am excited about the opportunities available to our students through the new Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technology,” states Dr. Tony Zeiss, President of CPCC. “In these classrooms, students will have a chance to receive the latest in instruction by industry-trained, experienced instructors. We are grateful to the Hendrick family for their generous gift to CPCC. As a result of their support, many students will have an opportunity to pursue their dreams in the automotive industry.”

Auto labor statistics indicate that over the next three years, nearly 160,000 qualified technicians will be needed in the automotive industry. In addition, between 20,000 to 38,000 qualified autobody technicians will be needed in the next three years. CPCC is working hard to address this labor shortage. A 2006 economic impact study on motorsports revealed the industry provides 26,000 jobs in North Carolina and generates an estimated $6 billion.

The Center is named in honor of the late Joe Hendrick, a pioneer in North Carolina’s automotive and racing industries.

“It was obvious to everyone who knew my father that he had a love of cars and a great desire to help others, especially young folks, reach their true potential,” explains Rick Hendrick. “He would be so humbled to know that his name will be associated with an institution that honors both of those passions.

”The Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technology at CPCC is all about creating opportunities in our industry and region. Together, everyone in this community – from the manufacturers and auto dealers to our leadership in government – has truly stepped up to build a world-class facility.”
technology. The new facility features six classrooms and six labs with the latest in equipment and technology. The Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technology serves technicians who are seeking updated technical skills through contract training and corporate and continuing education classes, as well as those who aspire to be technicians through curriculum programs.

The Center was named in honor of the late Joe Hendrick, a pioneer in North Carolina’s automotive and racing industries. At the event, a plaque and portrait of Joe Hendrick were unveiled and will be placed in the new Center. The facility also houses a timeline featuring the life of Joe Hendrick and significant events in racing and motorsports.

“In North Carolina, we are not only #1 in NASCAR and #3 in biotechnology, but today, we’re #1 in automotive technology training, thanks to this new facility,” Governor Mike Easley explained at the event. “Long gone are the days of the ‘shade tree mechanics.’ This Center is on the cutting-edge of technology, and I know ‘Papa Joe’ would be proud.”

”I am excited about the opportunities available to our students through the new Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technology,” stated Dr.

“It was obvious to everyone who knew my father that he had a love of cars and a great desire to help others, especially young folks, reach their true potential. He would be so humbled to know that his name will be associated with an institution that honors both of those passions.

”The Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technology is all about creating opportunities in our industry and region. We are fortunate to have Dr. Tony Zeiss leading what I believe is the premier community college in this country. For more than 20 years, we’ve had a strong partnership with CPCC, and this new facility takes that relationship to an even higher level.”

Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation Makes Generous Gift to the College

Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) announced plans today to name the new dining lab in the College’s future culinary facility on Central Campus the Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation Dining Room. The naming comes as a result of a generous gift made earlier this year by Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation to the College’s culinary program. The grant, totaling $180,000, will be used to acquire equipment for the new building and endow a scholarship for culinary students.

The new culinary facility will be built at the corner of Kings Drive and 7th Street along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway. Plans are currently underway for this state-of-the-art facility that will house the College’s programs in culinary technology, and hotel and restaurant management. This highly successful program will now have an opportunity to expand with the new facility, which is slated to be complete in 2009.

“We are extremely appreciative of the generous gift by the Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation to CPCC,” stated Dr. Tony Zeiss, President of CPCC. “The gift to our culinary program will allow us to provide our students with the equipment and technology they need to be competitive in the culinary business. The support for scholarships also enables us to encourage more students to pursue their dreams in this profession.”

"Playing an active role in the development of the communities we serve is an important element of our Company’s mission,” stated Kevin M. O’Hara, Senior Vice President of Corporate and Community Affairs for Piedmont Natural Gas. “We value this opportunity to work with CPCC in an effort to provide resources that will assist current and future students in preparing for culinary careers."

New Non-Destructive Examination Program Offered at CPCC

Program Provides Solution to Shortage of Skilled Workers in High Demand Career

Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) will offer an exciting new associate’s degree program this month that addresses the critical shortage in one of the most high demand jobs in the country. The new Non-Destructive Examination program offers training for professionals who test welds and detect hidden indications of flaws in railroads, ships, bridges, airplanes, nuclear power plants, and much more. CPCC is one of the first community colleges in the Southeast to offer this program.

Non-Destructive Examination is a form of examining a material or part without damaging the intended usefulness of the component. Unlike destructive examination, where the part is destroyed as a part of the examination, NDE methods are applied to find hidden indications of potential flaws. These are then compared to standards, established by sound engineering principles, to determine if the part can continue in service. NDE is often a routine part of design, manufacture, and in-service testing performed to better establish and assess the reliability of the part in its design function.

“NDE testing can be compared to the work of a dentist or doctor who uses x-rays or diagnostic testing to determine a health related issue,” states Robert Smilie, NDE instructor at CPCC. “Through NDE testing, we can detect flaws or interruptions in bridges, aircraft carriers, ships, or power generators that could impact the safety of others. There is a tremendous need for qualified workers in this area, and CPCC is stepping up to the plate to help address the shortage.”

Graduates of the program can expect starting salaries in the neighborhood of $36,000, exceeding $50,000 with overtime; however, the work is intense and demanding. “Individuals interested in a career in NDE must be strong in physics, science, and math and enjoy a challenge,” states Smilie.

Admissions and other requirements for the new Associate’s Degree in NDE include completion of a high school diploma. In addition, a CPCC placement test in English and Math is required. Counseling and orientation follows the placement testing. Examples of courses required include Introduction to Non-Destructive Examination, Materials and Processes, Physics-Mechanics, Symbols and Specifications, Principles of Ultrasonics, Principles of Penetrant Testing, and others.

For more information on the new Non-Destructive Examination Program at CPCC, contact Anver Classens at 704.330.4428 or Robert Smilie at 704.330.4434. Registration for fall classes continues through August 17.

Civic Ventures, MetLife Foundation Invest in the Nation’s Leading Institutions Training Boomers for Jobs Benefiting the Greater Good

Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) has been recognized by Civic Ventures (CivicVentures.org), a think tank and program incubator helping society achieve the greatest return on experience, as one of 10 community colleges that will lead a major national effort to help prepare boomers for careers in education, health care and social services.

With support from MetLife Foundation, Civic Ventures will give CPCC a $25,000 grant to develop its “From Success to Significance” program, designed to appeal both baby boomers’ pride in their accomplishments and their desire to do more. The training program includes a series of career transition and encore career workshops offered by the CPCC Career Services. It also provides career counseling, personal coaching and job mentoring to guide students through the shift from the corporate to the non-profit sector in healthcare, social services, and education.

The state of North Carolina is now the third most popular retirement destination of all 50 states and has the fifth largest over sixty-five population in the country. In fact, 20% of the population in Mecklenburg County is in the 45-60 year age range. This population will once again reinvent what the next decade of their lives will look like.

With that in mind, Central Piedmont Community College implemented a new program that addresses the needs of the boomer population. The Lifetime Learning Institute provides an innovative opportunity for those midlife boomers who are in transition into new careers, entrepreneurial opportunities, and other life transitions. In addition, course offerings through this program bring together educational offerings and personal interest experiences. The “From Success to Significance” program is part of CPCC’s Lifetime Learning Institute.

“Community colleges are poised to become the primary vehicles that help to unleash the important knowledge and social capital that our communities and employers desperately need,” states Dr. Tony Zeiss, President of CPCC. “This grant will allow our College to provide a training program that takes baby boomers to the next phase in their career and their life.”

Studies show that the public interest sector — the fastest growing sector of our labor market — will face the greatest talent shortages as boomers continue to retire. At the same time, half of Americans in their 50s and 60s reported in a 2005 survey by MetLife Foundation and Civic Ventures that they were interested in jobs that improve their communities but did not believe that finding such employment would be easy.

“For tens of millions of baby boomers, a new phase of life and work is opening up between the end of midlife careers and the beginning of true old age,” said Marc Freedman, founder and CEO of Civic Ventures and author of Encore: Finding Work That Matters in the Second Half of Life (PublicAffairs Books, June 2007). “Traditional educational offerings for ‘seniors’ just won’t cut it anymore, particularly for those seeking to make a difference in their communities.”

After a year of implementing its initiative, CPCC will collaborate with Civic Ventures to publicly report on how to prepare boomers for encore careers that benefit society.

“CPCC and the other winners of the Community College Encore Career Grants will lead the way,” said Sibyl Jacobson, president and CEO of MetLife Foundation. “These educational pioneers will make it easier for baby boomers to transition to the purpose-driven jobs, easier for employers to find and hire them, and easier for other educators to meet the career needs of older learners.”

The other participating schools include: Baltimore City Community College (Baltimore, MD); Broward Community College (Ft. Lauderdale, FL); Coastline Community College (Fountain Valley, CA); Collin County Community College (Allen, TX); Gateway Community College (Phoenix, AZ); Owensboro Community and Technical College (Owensboro, KY); Portland Community College (Portland, OR); Virginia Community College System (Richmond, VA); and Washtenaw Community College (Ann Arbor, MI).

Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) was recognized by Charlotte-Mecklenburg School’s Career and Technical Education program on Wednesday, August 22 at their annual Back-to-School training meeting. The Construction Industry Education Coalition (CIEC), which includes CPCC and other construction related associations, was honored with the Career and Technical Education Service Award for 2007. In addition, CPCC President Dr. Tony Zeiss served as a keynote speaker and shared information with the CMS teachers on workforce development and the impending labor shortage.

The award was presented to Steve Corriher, Director of the Construction Technologies Division at CPCC, as well as Bill Stricker with Carolinas Associated General Contractors, and Ray Terry with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Under their leadership, CIEC has partnered with CMS’ Career and Technical Education to extend learning for CMS students in a number of ways. Some of the partnership opportunities include:
• Speakers for middle and high school career events
• Career speakers for individual class presentations
• $10,000 for the successful program, “If I Had A Hammer” program, which allows middle school students from 22 middle schools to spend a day at CPCC’s Harper Campus using math skills to construct a mini-house.
• Volunteers to facilitate the “If I Had A Hammer” program, which includes hundreds of volunteer hours

“CPCC and the Construction Industry Education Coalition are proud to be strong partners with CMS,” states Steve Corriher. “We believe that it takes all of us working together to ensure success for our students. Our investment in these students is important to the community and to the construction industry. Our hope is to get students interested in the construction profession early on and show them the career opportunities available to them.”

Hundreds of Alumni To Celebrate Successful Campaign and Renovated Facility

Central High School, located on the campus of Central Piedmont Community College (corner of Elizabeth Avenue and Kings Drive), holds a great deal of history and memories for many of Charlotte’s leaders and community members. To preserve its rich history and past, hundreds of Central High School alumni joined together in 2002 in a fundraising campaign to support the former Central High School facility and Central Piedmont Community College. On Sunday, September 30 from 1:00-4:00 p.m., CPCC will host a multi-class reunion and re-dedication of the Central High School building. Alumni from the Class of 1923 to 1959 are invited to join in this historic celebration.

Central High School was Charlotte’s first public secondary school and operated from 1923 to 1959. During its history, Central High established a tradition of academic excellence and engendered the ongoing loyalty of generations of students. Remarkable leaders who graduated from Central High School included the late CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt; journalist, historic author and public relations professional Jack Claiborne; Jim Beatty, the first man to break the four minute mile indoors; City Council member Patsy Kinsey; retail guru George Ivey, Jr. – just to name a few.

To celebrate and preserve the memory of their school, devoted alumni initiated the Central High School Legacy Campaign in 2002. Contributions from alumni and friends of Central High created the Legacy Fund to provide scholarship funds for students at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and to maintain the Central High Building as part of the College’s campus.

The Central High campaign efforts began in 2001 when College Administration joined Jim Beatty and others in a discussion about preserving the Central High building. A steering committee was formed for the Central High Legacy Campaign and led by co-chairs Jim Beatty and City Council member Patsy Kinsey.

To date, more than 997 gifts and pledges have been made to the Central High Legacy Campaign by alumni and friends. The fundraising campaign has been a tremendous success to date with more than $375,000 donated and pledged to honor and maintain the legacy of Central High School. As the fund matures and pledges are fulfilled, many more students will realize their dream of attending college at CPCC because Central High alumni gave back to honor the education they received at Central High.

On June 17, 2006, a garden, which was made possible by the fundraising campaign, was showcased at a dedication event across the street from Central High School. A commemorative plaque lists the Legacy Campaign donors.

In addition, Central High Legacy Campaign funds were used to complete work on the façade of the Central High building, which was completed this fall and will be featured as part of the dedication on September 30. Today, the Central High School facility houses CPCC’s registration, counseling, tutoring, and financial aid services, as well as classrooms.

”Central High School and CPCC share a rich history and legacy of academic excellence,” states Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC. “We are extremely grateful for the generous contributions provided to the College by Central High alumni and friends. This gift will have a lasting impact on our institution and our students.”
