“Hotel F&B” magazine has named Richard Spellman, program chair of the Hospitality Education Division at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), to its National Hotel Food and Beverage (F&B) Council. “Hotel F&B” is a bi-monthly publication that focuses on how to develop, operate and market a profitable and effective hotel foodservice.

The National F&B Council is comprised of 32 members - leading executive chefs, general managers, director of operations and others - who lend their industry operations knowledge and experience to ensure the magazine is sharing relevant and accurate news stories with readers. The council’s members represent a variety of leading hospitality industry powerhouses, including Washington Duke Inn, Crowne Plaza Ottawa, Hyatt Regency Waikiki and Mandarin Oriental Miami. Spellman is the only council member from an educational institution.

“My alliance with the council gives me access to the talented pool of operations professionals already affiliated with the council,” said Spellman. “Our students and graduates typically start their careers in operations. Therefore, being able to get input on recent industry trends, best practices, ideas and tactics from some of the best hospitality minds in the country is invaluable feedback and information that I can share with my students at CPCC. This will help me make CPCC’s Hotel/Restaurant Management curriculum more timely, effective and dynamic, increasing the market value of our graduates in the workforce.”

Spellman is well qualified for his new role on the council, a position he will hold indefinitely. He earned a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management from Florida International University (FIU) in Miami and an M.B.A. from Long Island University in New York. Upon graduating from FIU, he became the youngest general manager of any of Long Island’s 130 country clubs. He later transitioned to Interstate Hotels and Resorts, the largest hotel contract management company in the Unites States, where he served as a food & beverage director. In the classroom, Spellman shares his management experience with students and the knowledge he gained while employed with some of the most exclusive golf clubs, country clubs and restaurants in Miami, New York and abroad.

Central Piedmont Community College is the largest community college in North Carolina, offering close to 300 degree and certification programs, customized corporate training, market-focused continuing education, and special interest classes. CPCC is academically, financially and geographically accessible to all citizens of Mecklenburg County. In 2002, the National Alliance of Business named CPCC the Community College of the Year for its response to the workforce and technology needs of local employers and job seekers through innovative educational and training strategies.
