Visual Narrative Certificate
"Visual Narratives" is a term coined by the great comics illustrator, Will Eisner, to describe the power of telling stories through a combination of words and pictures. We offer a Visual Narrative Certificate, a series of five courses that will introduce you to the world of graphic storytelling with the goal of creating and publishing your own comics, graphic novels and picture books.
GRX7120 UNDERSTANDING VISUAL NARRATIVES
This 8-week course, the first in the Visual Narrative Certificate program, is an introduction to art of the visual narrative: comic books, graphic novels and picture books. Students will study the history and contribution of visual narrative and the many different forms it has taken over the ages. During the course students will create their own graphic storys.
At the end of the course, successful students will be able to do the following:
- Understand the history of visual narratives as method of communication.
- Identify different forms visual narratives can take, from hieroglyphics to graphic novels.
This course is only offered in the FALL semester.
GRX7130 CREATING VISUAL NARRATIVES
This 8-week course, the second in the Visual Narrative Certificate program, focuses on the mechanics of constructing a complete visual narrative, including basic principles and elements of page layout, scriptwriting, storyboarding and character development. Students will continue to develop a complex visual narrative of their own.
At the end of the course, successful students will be able to do the following:
- Design an effective page layout
- Write an efficient script for a visual narrative
- Create a storyboard
- Apply the principles and elements of good design
This course is only offered in the FALL semester.
GRX7140 PRODUCING VISUAL NARRATIVES
This course, the third in the Visual Narrative Certificate program, focuses on the craft of creating visual narratives, especially inking, lettering and coloring.
At the end of the course, successful students will be able to do the following:
- Hand-letter text and headlines
- Ink their drawings using various tools
- Scan their finished drawings
- Clean-up and color their drawings using Photoshop
- Prepare and save their files for production correctly
This course is only offered in the SPRING semester.
GRX7150 PUBLISHING VISUAL NARRATIVES
The 8-week course, the fourth in the Visual Narrative Certificate program, focuses on making visual narratives available to the public through traditional publishing methods.
At the end of the course, successful students will be able to do the following:
- Have their completed work printed and bound
- Secure the copyrights to their work
- Create and follow a marketing plan
- Explore various traditional and non-traditional methods of distribution
This course is only offered in the SPRING semester.
GRX7160 THE INFINITE PAGE: PUBLISHING VISUAL NARRATIVES ONLINE
This 8-week course is the fifth and final course in the Visual Narrative Certificate program and focuses on the Internet as tool for publishing visual narratives. During the course, students will develop a web-based comic
At the end of the course, successful students will be able to do the following:
- Understand the difference between print and web publishing
- Understand how to prepare and save artwork for publication on the web
- Experiment with the non-linear aspects of narratives presented on the web and its impact on visual storytelling.
This course is only offered in the SUMMER semester.
