Botanical Illustration Certificate
Botanical imagery is used throughout the design world and has been a staple in design for thousands of years. In the last ten years there has been a renaissance of interest in botanical painting. This Certificate in Botanical Illustration is a three course series designed for those who love the natural world and would like to try capture the beauty of nature through traditional illustration methods and techniques.
GRX8320 BEGINNING BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION
The objective of this 8-week course is to introduce students to the art of botanical illustration and instruct them in the use of drawing and watercolor to create their own botanical studies.
An overview of the history of botanical illustration will be offered. The importance of direct observation from nature will be emphasized using the traditional medium of watercolor to depict flowers, fruit and vegetables. Pigments, papers and brushes will be discussed in depth. Basic plant structure will be covered.
This is the first course towards the Botanical Illustration Certificate.
GRX8321 INTERMEDIATE BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION
This 8-week course is the second in the Botanical Illustration Certificate series.
Deepen student’s skills in the use of traditional media for creating botanical studies. Students will continue the study of plant structure and traditional media for creating illustrations based on the natural world.
Students must have successfully completed GRX8320 Beginning Botanical Illustration to take this course.
GRX8322 ADVANCED BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION
This 8-week class is the third and final course in the Botanical Illustration Certificate series and is a continuation of GRX8321 Intermediate Botanical Illustration. This course deepen the student’s skills in the use of traditional media for creating botanical studies.
Students must have successfully completed GRX8321 Intermediate Botanical Illustration to take this course.
GRX8323 BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP
This workshop is designed for students who have completed or are currently enrolled in GRX8320, GRX8321 or GRX8322 botanical illustration courses, and want to work on independent projects in a communal atmosphere, with minimal direction.
