On this day in 1985, Barbara Bush, then wife of Vice President George H. W. Bush, visited ABLE, CPCC's adult basic literacy program. Mrs. Bush toured the ABLE facilities and then participated in a ceremony honoring ninety ABLE volunteers. According to the Charlotte Observer, Mrs. Bush said this about her choice to visit CPCC:

"As wife of the Vice President I receive many, many invitations, more than I can accept. I only visit proven programs. The U.S. Department of Education said ABLE was the greatest program...with its use of technology and tutoring."

She went on to proclaim the ABLE program a "model for the entire country." Enjoy these photos from her visit!
